Frenkie De Jong has signed a new contract with Barcelona, extending his stay until 2029. The Dutch midfielder, who joined from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million, had one year left on his previous deal. The extension includes a reduced salary, ensuring stability for both player and club as he continues under Hansi Flick’s leadership.
As the 2025-26 football season gathers pace, Barcelona have secured the long-term future of one of their most influential midfielders, Frenkie de Jong, by extending his contract until 2029. The Dutch international’s previous deal was due to expire in 2026, which would have allowed him to negotiate with other clubs as early as January 2025. Negotiations for the renewal took longer than expected, partly due to De Jong changing his agent earlier this year.
The new contract reportedly includes a reduced base salary, reflecting Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to manage their wage structure. His earlier deal, signed during the COVID-19 pandemic, contained deferred payments that increased over time, prompting the club to consider selling him to Manchester United in 2022 to ease financial pressure. However, De Jong consistently reiterated his commitment to staying at Camp Nou.
Since joining Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million, the 28-year-old has made over 250 appearances and won six trophies, including two LaLiga titles. Under Hansi Flick, De Jong is expected to remain a key figure alongside Pedri in the midfield. His extension represents both a statement of loyalty and a strategic decision for Barcelona’s long-term stability.
