Mohammed Shami is keen to make his comeback in the Test format. After taking a dig at the BCCI selectors, he kept on proving himself in the Ranji Trophy. Recently, he helped Bengal to win the match against Gujarat with a terrific spell.

Mohammed Shami is the perfect example of the phrase, Class is Temporary, Form is Permanent. He is now keen to prove his worth to the BCCI Selectors and eventually find his way back to the Indian team. Shami last made an appearance for the Indian Test team in the WTC Final back in 2023.

Since then, he has been working hard to prove his worth to the BCCI selectors and eventually make his way to the Indian team. In the Ranji Trophy, he seems to have grabbed the attention of the selection committee with his impressive performances. In just two games, Shami has managed to take 15 wickets for the team, creating a statement of intent towards the selectors.

1. Shami's Ranji Trophy Dominance

There were a lot of questions on Shami's fitness and form, but he decided to answer all of them with his performances. Mohammed Shami participated in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 edition, where he is currently playing for Bengal. In the two games played, Shami holds third spot in terms of most wickets, with 15 wickets in 4 innings at an average of 10.46.

Bengal first went against Uttarakhand to start its campaign. And Shami, playing in the longer format after a long time, decided to mark his comeback. In the first innings, he took 3 wickets in 15 overs and conceded just 37 runs. Bengal restrict Uttarakhand to a score of just 213 runs.

In response, the team was able to score 323 runs, taking a massive lead ahead of the second half of the game. Shami decided to contribute even in the second innings, as he took 4 wickets and conceded just 38 runs. Taking 7 wickets in the game, Shami also received the POTM award.

Still, he knew that the job was not over, and it was time for him to perform well even in the next game against Gujarat. In the first innings, Bengal ended up scoring 279 runs before being bowled out. Shami was able to strike quickly against Gujarat’s top order, of Abhishek Desai and Siddharth Desai.

By taking the last wicket, Shami finished with 3 wickets and 44 runs in the first innings. Bengal declared after scoring 214 runs in the second innings, and now it was time for Shami to shine with the ball once again. He took a five-wicket haul in the game, bowling out Gujarat for just 185 runs. Shami took 8 wickets in the game against Gujarat, giving another match-winning spell to the team.

2. Shami & Agarkar’s Verbal Feud

Mohammed Shami felt very disappointed when he was not selected by the Indian team for the tour of Australia. To this, several media reporters also asked the selectors about the reasons behind his exclusion. Ajit Agarkar marked fitness as one of the major concerns behind which they had to drop Mohammed Shami .

When this was asked by Shami during the Ranji Trophy, he said that the fitness issues don't persist. Taking a dig at the selectors, he said that if he can play four days in the Ranji Trophy, he can also play for the Indian team in 50-overs cricket. Ajit Agarkar got to know about the statements made by Shami, and he decided to to the same.

Agarkar emphasised the fact that Shami has given several match-winning performances for the Indian team. He also said that if Shami was fit, he would have been on the plane, which took the Indian team to Australia. With that, he also took a dig at Shami's form by saying that if Shami said something, it is a that he should have with him, not the media.

Agarkar also said that the domestic season is going on, which will play a vital role in Shami's selection in the near future. As of now, Shami is not a part of the Indian team for the unofficial Tests against South Africa A, but he is keen to give the best replies to the BCCI selectors with his bowling skills.
