Twitter laughs as Axar Patel awarded only two runs despite running three

When you are under pressure in any sport, things start going wrong in ways that are often comical in nature. In the first ODI game against Australia, India were under the pump having lost their entire top order in the first ten overs, when Axar Patel missed out on a run having not made his crease.

After winning the toss, Australia expectedly put India to bat first on a hard deck in Perth. While all of India’s eyes were on the returning Rohit Sharma (8) and Virat Kohli (0), they were left disappointed as both stars were back in the hut inside of seven overs. Captain Shubman Gill did not last too long either as his laboured 18-ball 10 came to an end in the ninth over.

With the scoreboard gathering dust as the Aussies piled on the pressure, allowing just 27 runs in the first powerplay, Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer were tasked with the rebuild. And it looked like they were on the right track on the first ball after the powerplay. Mitchell Starc pitched up a delivery to the southpaw who drove it into an open offside and sprinted off due to the slow outfield. As the ball ended up back into the hands of the wicketkeeper, the batters had “completed” three runs.

The umpire though asked for a check as Axar had stumbled while completing the first run at the non striker’s end. The replays showed that he had landed his bat on the crease but had slipped and never actually crossed over. The umpires reversed the score to just two runs off the delivery and took a run off the score.

Twitter were not too pleased with Axar’s concentration lapse and vented out on social media about their feeling.
