Former Barcelona’s Star Jordi Alba Announces Retirement After 17-Year Career.

Spanish defender Jordi Alba has confirmed his retirement from professional football after Inter Miami’s MLS playoff campaign. The 36-year-old ends a 17-year career that included 459 matches, 27 goals, and 99 assists for Barcelona. Alba won 6 La Liga titles, 5 Copa del Reys, 4 Super Cups, and the 2015 Champions League before joining Inter Miami in 2023.

When the 36-year-old Jordi Alba announced his retirement from professional football, it marked the end of an illustrious 17-year career that began in Spain and concluded in the United States. The former Barcelona and Spanish international confirmed he would retire after Inter Miami’s ongoing MLS playoff campaign. Alba, who joined Inter Miami in 2023 following Lionel Messi’s arrival, became the second of Messi’s close teammates to retire this year, after Sergio Busquets.

Despite having a contract valid until 2027, Alba decided to end his playing days earlier, stating that he felt “peace and happiness” with his decision and was ready to begin a new chapter in life. At Barcelona, where he played from 2012 to 2023 after moving from Valencia, Alba made 459 appearances, scored 27 goals, and registered 99 assists. He won numerous honors, including 6 La Liga titles, 5 Copa del Rey trophies, 4 Spanish Super Cups, and the 2015 UEFA Champions League.

His long-time teammate Lionel Messi paid tribute to him on Instagram, saying it would feel strange not to see Alba on the left side anymore and jokingly asking, “Who’s gonna give me back passes now?” The post went viral, reflecting the deep bond between the two players.
