SS vs BH | Twitter impressed as Kerr and Davies’ all-round show takes Sixers past the line in close contest

After being put into bat at the International Sports Stadium, Heat opener Jack Wildermuth showed signs of aggression with a boundary off Ben Dwarshuis in the third ball of the innings. He then welcomed medium pacer Jack Edwards with back-to-back sixes in the first two balls of the third over, but fellow opener Lachlan Hearne and Wildermuth departed in the space of five balls as the visitors ended the four-over powerplay at 33/2. However, the Heat continued to tumble with their entire middle order, including captain Nathan McSweeney and in-form Matt Renshaw, falling cheaply as Dwarshuis struck twice in his second over. At 50/5, the batting side was badly in need of a partnership as Hugh Weibgen and Jimmy Peirson briefly held fort with a 22-run stand. But another collapse saw them slip to 91/9 with four overs to spare. But number 10 Oli Patterson’s unbeaten 19 helped the visitors go past the 100-run mark before finishing at 114/9. In the end, opener Wildermuth, who hit two fours and two sixes during his 17-ball 31, finished as the Heat’s top scorer with Weibgen making 24. For the home side, left-arm spinner Joel Davis ended with a spell of 2/19 in four overs, while the pace duo of Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott had identical figures of 2/25 in their respective four overs.

In return, the home side’s openers, especially Babar Azam, started cautiously, with Patterson picking up two wickets in his first over. The Sixers ended the mandatory powerplay on the defensive with the score reading 22/2 before fellow opener Daniel Hughes also departed an over later. Just like their opponents, the hosts also endured a horrible collapse to find themselves at 56/7 with more than nine overs left to play. Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann picked up two wickets in a single over, while Wildermuth and Renshaw also chipped in with a wicket each as the home side were left to chase 59 runs in 57 balls. But Davies and Kerr dug deep to take the game away from the Heat and pulled off an improbable win for the hosts. Davies had three fours and a six during his unbeaten knock of 35 off 26 balls, while Kerr hit a four and a six to give him company with a 25-ball 27 as the Sixers ended at 118/7 with eight balls to spare. Meanwhile, Kuhnemann was the Heat’s best bowler on display with a miserly spell of 2/14 in four overs, while Patterson also impressed with his two wickets earlier in the innings.
