How 2025 Finally Ended Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s 18-Year Wait for Glory.

The year 2025 has been a lucky charm for both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They have achieved something this year that they hadn't in the last 18 years. With Kohli winning the IPL trophy and Rohit achieving ICC Number 1 rankings, the year has been one for RoKo.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been in the headlines once again. Both of them made sure that 2025 would be the year they ended the wait for something they hadn't achieved for years. Virat Kohli had achieved ICC Number 1 rankings, and Rohit had won the IPL trophy. But neither of them get what the other had,

Their wait ended in 2025, with Kohli winning the IPL trophy and Rohit achieving the ICC number one rankings in the ODI format. Since Rohit is now playing just one format, he has achieved the number one ranking in it after a long time. Moreover, the year turned out to be one to remember for Kohli and RCB fans, as he also went on to win his first-ever IPL title.

1. Kohli Wins IPL Trophy

Fans knew that there was something different in 2025 when they saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru dominate in the Indian Premier League. The team went through numerous changes before the season. Rajat Patidar was announced as the new captain of the team, replacing Faf du Plessis

RCB had its best campaign under Patidar, winning all the away games. Also, the team finished 2nd in the standings, going against the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1. Their bowlers were able to dominate the Punjab batsmen with ease, bowling them all out for 101. The target was easily chased down by RCB,

With this, the team marched to the IPL finals for the fourth time. This time, they faced the Punjab Kings yet again in the final, who defeated the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. RCB had batted first in the final clash, and the team ended up scoring 190 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Kohli the top scorer with 43 runs.

While chasing, the Punjab Kings lost quick wickets, which put them out of the game. When the game was almost in the hands of RCB, Virat Kohli was seen breaking down with tears of happiness on the ground. The player who felt disappointed after the 2016 final loss came out to be the happiest after the team won its first title in 2025. This also marked an end to the 18 years of trolling that the team had suffered for not winning the IPL even once.

2. Rohit Gets Number One ICC Ranking

Virat Kohli had been at the top spot across all three formats of the game. But Rohit Sharma was not able to achieve it, despite giving his best to the team. He had already retired from the Test and T20I formats, which left him only with the ODI format to achieve the in this format.

The Hitman has been dominant in the ODI format since the 2023 World Cup. His performances have been a lot better in this format, which has kept him close to the top spot in the ICC rankings. But, he had to wait till the series against Australia to finally end his wait and achieve the same.

Shubman Gill and Ibrahim Zadran stood above him in the standings, but Rohit Sharma seemed unstoppable against Australia. He scored 73 runs in the second ODI, which was followed by a ton in the third. At the same time, Shubman Gill was not able to perform well in the ODI series against Australia, and Ibrahim Zadran had no ODI

As a result, with the ICC rankings being updated, Rohit Sharma was finally able to achieve the top spot in the ICC rankings. Being the top ODI batsman at the age of 38 also allowed him to set a new record. He is now the oldest batsman to have held the top spot in the ICC rankings across all formats of the game.

Earlier this record was held by Sachin Tendulkar, but now it belongs to the Hitman. Rohit Sharma seems all set to hold the top place in the ICC rankings, noting the fact that India will be having the next ODI series at home, which will be against South Africa.
