The Indian team has made an unwanted record in the ODI format. And this is not with the bat or ball, for which the team could have done something. It is related to the toss, as India lost their 17th consecutive toss in the ODI format.

The Indian team and the toss seem to be two things which have gone parallel to each other. Always together but never met each other. This has been the condition for the Indian team, as they have registered an unwanted record in the ODI format. for having the most consecutive toss losses in ODI games.

In the second ODI match against Australia, India lost the toss yet again. This has been normal for the Indian fans to watch, as it has been going on for a while. India had last won the toss on 15 November 2023, in the World Cup semi-final clash against New Zealand. Since then, the team has lost 17 tosses consecutively in the ODI format.

1. Probability of Losing 17 Consecutive Tosses

The Indian team didn't just register an unwanted record of losing the tosses in the ODI format. They are now extending this record with every ODI match that goes on for the team. With its last ODI toss win coming on 15 November 2023, it will be almost two years for the team has won the toss in this format.

The probability of losing 17 consecutive tosses in a row is 1/131702. This means it is a very rare record to have ever been made in the history of the game. Moreover, it should be noted that this record was created by India during the Champions Trophy 2025. , the team has had several changes made to its line-up, with players being added and removed.

But the luck for the toss didn't change. India decided to have a new skipper to make the luck favour during the toss. Even with Shubman Gill giving the call at the toss time, the decision has not been in India's favour till now. With the probability of losing 17 consecutive tosses being 0.000763%, no team might even reach close to the same.

2. When India Last Won a Toss in the ODI Format

India had won the toss in the ODI format during the 2023 World Cup. It was during the semi-final clash against New Zealand, which opened the way for India to mark their spot in the tournament finals. Several fans might even call it the last time when Indian fans were happy with the performances of the team.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a strong start to the team, as India won the toss and decided to bat first. Eventually, Rohit was dismissed for the score of 47, when Virat Kohli stepped in at number three.

With Shreyas Iyer joining Kohli, both went on to dominate the New Zealand bowling line-up. Virat Kohli went on to complete his 50th ODI century, breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede Stadium. This also made him the first batsman to score 50 tons in the ODI format of the game.

Further, Shreyas Iyer also scored a ton for the Indian team. KL Rahul played the role of a finisher in the game, as India ended up scoring 397 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. India had a great start with the ball, as Mohammed Shami took down both openers within the power play.

After that, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell stitched a partnership which made the Indian team worried. However, Shami struck once again by taking the wicket of Williamson, with a brilliant catch by Suryakumar Yadav. The wickets kept on falling after this, as Shami finished the game with 7 wickets in his hand. India won the game by 70 runs, as Shami and Kohli went on to create records.
