PAK vs AUS | Twitter in splits as Sana rallies team into desperate pleas to umpire despite gaffing run-out

Pakistan have built up their reputation in the cricket world as a nation that wears their heart on its sleeves, often using emotion to fuel glory as well as self-destruct. Skipper Fatima Sana is no different, as she showcased during an absurd incident against Australia at the Women's World Cup.

Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana was her usual livewire self in the Women's World Cup encounter against Australia in Colombo

Pakistan stood on the brink of history at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as their bowling efforts had left defending World champions Australia teetering and on the verge of a substantially sub-par score. After surviving through the powerplay at 40/2, the Women from Down Under endured a tragic collapse to 76/7 with Beth Mooney the only recognized batter remaining. However, the veteran had already made a brilliant start to her innings by racing past 30 and with tailenders like Kim Garth and Alana King more than capable of holding a bat at the other end, wickets remained a priority for the Asian contingent if they were to register a first-ever WODI win over their rivals in 18 attempts. In this dire situation, skipper Fatima Sana was handed an opportunity on a platter but not only did she let it slip but also embarassed her team in the aftermath.

On the penultimate ball of the 28th over, Mooney turned a ball off her pads towards midwicket and called for a quick double. However, Garth was not epecting the late call and was well beyond the halfway mark when the fielder took control of the ball. An accurate throw was fired in towards the stumps but Fana had made the rookie mistake of being in front of the stumps rather than behind, which meant she intercepted the ball midway through its journey. The youngtser executed an awkward turn to take off the bails as quick as she could but enough time had spanned for Garth to get home comfortably, much to Sana's frustration who smacked the ball into the deck out of frustration. Despite the realization of having messed up, Sana curiously pressed the umpire to go upstairs by making an appeal. When the official denied her request, a group of Pakistan players swarmed her, desperately pleading for a review even as the umpire firmly stood her ground.

Sana had to ultimately wave her players away and the replays confirmed any replay would have been futile, causing much amusement to Twitterati.
