Women’s World Cup | Twitter in splits as Ecclestone cringes in guilt after nearly “impaling” Sciver-Brunt

No sport appreciates friendly fire, least of all one involving a rock hard leather-cork ball and gigantic wooden willows. Unfortunately, England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt fell victim in the Women’s World Cup game against Bangladesh in Guwahati on Tuesday at the hands of teammate Sophie Ecclestone.

Sharmin AKhter got Bangladesh off to a confident start at the Baraspara Stadium after being put in to bat first as the side rushed past 20 within the first five overs. However, disaster soon struck when she lost two partners in the space of four balls, leading to a drastic slowdown that had the Tigresses end the powerplay at 31/2. It was all going smooth and sweet for England, until Sophie Ecclestone decided to inject some misery into the fixture out of the blue.

Sobhana Mostary welcomed the end of field restrictions with a boundary off her pads against Sciver-Brunt, prompting the England skipper to go fuller and a bit straighter. Mostary gently pushed the ball towards mid-on and sprinted for a quick single, while Ecclestone ran to her left and casually fired in a throw with Mostary well safe. However, Sciver-Brunt who had been quietly watching proceedings after her follow through and had begun her walk back to the mark, had no time to react as the Kookaburra missed the stumps and hit her shin square on. The stump mic picked up a harmonised loud gasp echoing from the England brunch, while Ecclestone cringed her face in second-hand pain with her hands inadvertently clawed up.

The spinner received some well-earned chastising from her teammates around, with Twitterati joining in.
