Is Shubman Gill Still Indias Preferred Opener Over Jaiswal?

Shubman Gill has been opening for the Indian team since the Asia Cup 2025. But he has not been able to bring up big scores for the team despite opening with Abhishek Sharma. As his form continues to fall, questions arise whether Jaiswal can come in his place or not.

Shubman Gill has been opening for the Indian team since the Asia Cup 2025. But he has not been able to bring up big scores for the team despite opening with Abhishek Sharma. As his form continues to fall, questions arise whether Jaiswal can come in his place or not.
Shubman Gill has not been able to prove himself as an opener for the Indian team in the T20I format. He marked his return to the shortest format of the game in Asia Cup 2025, being announced as the team's Vice Captain. But Gill has not been able to prove himself worthy
In the fourth T20I match against Australia, he performed well but failed to score runs at a good pace. Gill was only able to bring 46 runs on the board, as his dismal form as an opener continues. At the same time, it is being questioned whether Gill still remains the preferred choice by the selectors as a T20I opener ahead of Jaiswal or not.
1. Shubman Gill's Inconsistent Form
Shubman Gill was not a part of the Indian team in the T20I format over the last few months. The opening slot was being held by Sanju Samson in place of Shubman Gill but some massive changes took place ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. With Gill coming in the team, he replaced Sanju Samson as an opener.
Shubman Gill in T20Is in 2025:
- Innings: 11
- Not Out: 2
- Runs: 230
- Average: 25.55
- Strike Rate: 139.39
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 0
This year, Shubman Gill has failed to score even a single half-century for the Indian team in the T20I format. Along with that, it should also be noted that he crossed the 30-run mark on three occasions, once in the Asia Cup and two times in the T20I
Moreover, there have been six instances where Gill just scored 15 runs or even below while opening for the team this year. It has been a tough time for Shubman Gill in the shortest format of the game. Being the Vice Captain of the lineup, he will be eager to end the series against Australia
In the Asia Cup 2025, Shubman Gill played all the games for the Indian team. Only once he reached close to a half-century, which was against Pakistan in the Super Fours. He scored 47 runs before losing his wicket. Along with that, it should be noted that his average in the Asia Cup 2025 was just 21.16.
2. Jaiswal in T20Is
While Shubman Gill is struggling to score runs consistently while opening for the team, there is Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has been eager to maintain his spot in the Indian team across formats. But right now, he only finds himself as a key batsman for the team in the Test format.
Yashasvi Jaiswal in T20Is:
- Innings: 22
- Not Out: 2
- Runs: 723
- Average: 36.15
- Strike Rate: 164.31
- 100s: 1
- 50s: 5
Jaiswal made his T20I debut for the Indian team in 2023 against the West Indies where he scored just one run. Even in his last T20I appearance in 2024, he opened for the team along with Shubman Gill. Against Sri Lanka, he scored just 10 runs in that game and it turned out to be his last in the shortest format.
Yashasvi Jaiswal in IPL 2025:
- Innings: 14
- Not Out: 1
- Runs: 559
- Average: 43.00
- Strike Rate: 159.71
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 6
Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been able to do well in the IPL, to find his place in the T20I side. But he has been sidelined from the T20I team for a long time. With Gill struggling to perform well, it could open doors for Jaiswal to receive his call up for the team in the shortest format of the game. Still, it should be noted that Sanju Samson remains in the mix of the opening slot for the team.
