The Hundred is now expected to have some major changes ahead of the new season. With several teams being acquired ahead of the new season, the ownership effects have started to take place. It all started with a team changing its name to correspond with the new owners.
The Hundred will be going through some massive changes in the upcoming season. These changes are currently limited to just three teams which have been acquired by the new owners. A change in ownership also leads to several new things, and this has started for Northern Superchargers just before the
The team was acquired by Sun Group, which also owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. This also shows the expansion of the ownership, and how the ECB also cooperated by inviting other investors. Now, fans will be able to see the same team, Northern Superchargers, going with a different name from now onwards.
1. Sun Group Acquires Northern Superchargers
For the Hundred, the England and Wales Cricket Board invited companies to invest in the teams. They opened just 51% of the shareholdings and several companies who are involved in the IPL also showed interest. Among them, the Sun Group, owning Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 also showed interest.
After the bidding wars, the Sun Group acquired Northern Superchargers for a massive deal of £100 million. With this, the team acquired the 51% stakes of Yorkshire Cricket Club and 49% of the stake being held by the England and Wales Cricket Board. They had fully acquired the team later on, with all the paperworks and official work
Following this, it was clear that some changes will be made to the team ahead of the upcoming edition of the Hundred. The changes have now started to take place, with the name being changed giving more authority to the owners. Now, Northern Superchargers will be known as Sunrisers Leeds.
Along with the Sun Group, several other companies who already have a stake in the IPL teams showed interest. These included the popular names of Reliance, which owns Mumbai Indians, and RPSG Group, which owns Lucknow SuperGiants. By acquiring Northern Superchargers, Sun Group is keen to expand its global cricket reach.
2. Northern Superchargers History
Northern Superchargers, now known as Sunrisers Leeds, have been a part of the Hundred since the inauguration of the tournament. This team represents Yorkshire and the areas of North-east England. Its home matches take place at the iconic Headingley Cricket Ground, some of the most thriller games.
The men's team is yet to win a title but the women's team have been successful in winning one. They were able to win the Women's Hundred 2025, with the team getting its first title even before the men's team. The men's team does not have a good history in this tournament, as they have made it to the playoffs only once.
But in the case of the Women's team, things have been a lot different. Northern Superchargers Women once finished as the runners-up of the tournament. Taking a look at their dominance, it didn't take them much time to win the first title in the Hundred Women's in 2025.
3. Flintoff's Resignation
Andrew Flintoff, who was the Head Coach of the men's team for two seasons. But after the team got acquired by the Sun Group, things took a drastic change. The name change of Northern Superchargers is not the first thing which took place for the team before the new season.
Andrew Flintoff resigned as the Head Coach of the team just a few weeks after it was handed to the new owners. Currently, the men's team is yet to announce a new Head Coach for their line-up, which is expected to be done just in time for the new season.
, Flintoff said, “I'll be honest with you, franchise coaching was never in my plans. Marcus North [director of cricket] phoned me up, and I thought: 'Yeah, go on then.' And I loved it, actually. It was at Yorkshire , which was different for me [as a former Lancashire player], but then to actually be involved in it, I think they took to us. As a side we did some pretty good stuff, but we were so unlucky.”
He also talked about the changes in the ownership and how it has started to affect the team. For this he said, “We've seen the Hundred change now. We've got new owners, and I spoke to them when they phoned up. They said they wanted us to do it, so I said: 'Yeah, fine. Make us an offer.’ I genuinely don't do it for the money, right, although it's nice … but I think I'm worth more than just over a quarter of the [salary of] other head coaches. I wasn't encouraged they wanted me anyway, but then also you want to feel valued. So I said that it's not going to work for me, and they weren't going to move on it.”
What other changes could take place for the team just before the upcoming edition of The Hundred?
