India Champions’ opening pair of Robin Uthappa and Shikhar Dhawan provided a strong opening stand of 43 runs in just 5.2 overs. This partnership came to an end when Dhawan’s inside edge off Dwayne Bravo went straight into the stumps, ending his knock at 28 (21). Uthappa continued to bat before his 24-ball 36 ended in a mistimed lofted shot off Kieron Pollard and caught by Chadwick Walton. In the middle-order, star batter Yuvraj Singh took charge for India and smashed 33 off just 19 balls, hitting three sixes and two fours. He was accompanied by Binny’s 10-ball 14 and Irfan Pathan’s unbeaten 16* (11). These knocks took India’s total to 165/7, posting a decent total to chase down for the Caribbean Champs. Bravo and Pollard registered the economic figures of 2/25 and 2/21 in their respective spells.
West Indies lost both the openers, Dwayne Smith (24 off 13 balls) and Chris Gayle on 21 (16), at the team’s score of 49 runs in 5.4 overs. Lendl Simmons stabilised the Caribbean chase with his 22-ball 33 while batting at number three. But his knock came to an end when he was caught at deep square by Shikhar Dhawan off Pawan Naegi in the 11th over. Following Simmons’ dismissal, it was only Dwayne Bravo who showed a bit of resilience with a 27-run knock, but that wasn’t enough for his side. Eventually, the West Indies Champs were restricted to a total of 158/9 in the entire 20 overs. Pathan, Negi and R Vinay Kumar bagged two wickets each to help their side register the first win in the tournament’s current edition.
