In the lead-up to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, an interesting storyline has emerged involving Erling Haaland and Iraqi striker Ali Al-Hamadi. Iraq secured their place in the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in the final playoff, marking their first World Cup qualification in 40 years. Al Hamadi played a key role by scoring in that crucial match, sparking massive celebrations across the nation, with reports suggesting around 46 million people followed the game.

The two players previously crossed paths during the 2024-2025 season when Al Hamadi, then at Ipswich Town, faced Haaland’s Manchester City. In that match, Haaland scored a hat trick in a 4-1 win, while Al Hamadi featured briefly. After the game, Al Hamadi asked for Haaland’s shirt but was refused, with the Norwegian opting to keep it following his standout performance.

Now, both players could meet again on June 16 when Norway face Iraq in the World Cup group stage, which also includes France and Senegal. Despite limited appearances due to injury this season, Al Hamadi remains focused on regaining form and helping Iraq compete strongly on football’s biggest stage.
