For the defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, the opening round of the German Cup almost turned into a major upset as they scraped past third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden with a dramatic 3-2 victory. Harry Kane was at the heart of the action, scoring twice including a last-gasp winner in stoppage time to spare Bayern’s blushes. The visitors started well, taking the lead in the 16th minute when Kane converted a penalty, his 31st successful spot-kick in succession for club and country.

After halftime, Michael Olise capitalised on a defensive error to double Bayern’s advantage in the 51st minute, seemingly setting them on course for a routine win. However, the hosts roared back, inspired by captain Fatih Kaya, who struck twice in five minutes. First, he finished a superb cross from Niklas May in the 64th minute, before latching onto Moritz Flotho’s flick to level the contest soon after.

Kane then had the chance to restore Bayern’s lead from the spot but saw his 76th-minute penalty saved by Florian Stritzel, marking his first miss since the 2022 World Cup. Redemption arrived in added time as Kane rose highest to head home Josip Stanisic’s cross, ensuring Bayern progressed to the second round.
