Harry Maguire Says Leaving Manchester United Now Would Be Silly

Harry Maguire confirmed Manchester United blocked his exit this summer despite outside interest. The 32-year-old defender’s contract, extended by a club option in January, now runs until next summer. Maguire praised Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s restructuring and manager Ruben Amorim’s leadership, saying United are in their best place since his 2019 arrival from Leicester.

For the second summer in a row, Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United has been in the spotlight, but the defender insists it would be “silly” to walk away now. United triggered a clause in his deal back in January, extending his stay until summer 2026 at a time when manager Ruben Amorim highlighted the squad’s lack of leaders. Unlike other cases where extensions were used to secure a transfer fee, the club was clear that Maguire was not leaving.

The 32-year-old, signed from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, admitted there was interest from clubs this summer, but United quickly rejected any approach. His contract is now due to expire next year, meaning he can negotiate with other sides from January if no new deal is agreed. Maguire had previously turned down a move to West Ham two years ago after United accepted an offer.

Despite last season being United’s worst league campaign since 1973-74 and opening the new term with a defeat to Arsenal, Maguire believes the club is in its strongest position since his arrival. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment and new figures like technical director Jason Wilcox driving structural changes, he feels United are finally moving in the right direction.
