The first T20I match between India and Australia ended without any result, with the game being accepted by rain. However, there have still been concerns related to the playing XI selected by the team. Harshit Rana was given a preference over Arshdeep Singh, who is India's highest wicket-taker in T20Is.

Imagine being the team's highest wicket-taker in the T20I format and still not being able to make it to the playing XI. This is the situation of Arshdeep Singh, who was benched yet again in the India vs Australia first T20I game. In his place, the Indian team to have Harshit Rana, who performed well in the third ODI.

This decision by the team and selectors has received a lot of criticism. Several former players, including Irfan Pathan, Shreevats Goswami, and a lot more, have voiced their concern about the team picking Harshit Rana over Arshdeep Singh. Although the first game has ended with no result, fans are worried about the future of Arshdeep Singh.

1. Harshit Rana in T20Is

Harshit Rana finding a place in the Indian team has been quite consistent for the fans, as he was also able to prove himself in the ODI series against Australia. Having much less experience in the shortest format of the game, he was still able to find his place in the team's playing XI.

Harshit Rana in T20Is:

  • Innings: 3
  • Overs: 11
  • Maidens: -
  • Wickets: 5
  • Average: 22.40
  • Economy: 10.18

With his experience in the T20I format spanning just three games, he was selected to the Indian team's playing XI for the match against Australia. Harshit Rana has received some experience in the Australian pitches, as he was a part of the Test series,  a few months before, and also the T20I series, which happened recently.

But picking up Harshit Rana over India's star bowler Arshdeep Singh remains questionable to the fans. Arshdeep became the first Indian bowler to have taken 100 wickets in the T20I format, and now he struggles to find his place in the playing XI. Even Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, reacted to the same.

2. Arshdeep Singh's T20I Dominance

Arshdeep Singh has proven himself to be India's best T20I bowler in this generation. He has been among the most consistent wicket-takers for the team, which has been the reason why he was actively a part of the squad. Making his debut in 2022, he was able to reach the 100-wicket mark in just a few years.

Arshdeep Singh in T20Is:

  • Innings: 65
  • Overs: 226.2
  • Maidens: 2
  • Wickets: 101
  • Average: 18.76
  • Economy: 8.37

Whether the Indian team is playing at home or away, it is consistent for Arshdeep Singh to be selected. But unfortunately, that has not been the story for the Indian left-arm pacer this year. This year, he has played just 5 games for the Indian team, which is far fewer than the games in a single year.

The questions regarding him not being selected have been put up by several fans on the internet. While any reaction from the BCCI selectors or the Indian captain is still not out, fans await a response from them. Arshdeep Singh has also dominated in the T20 World Cup, having 27 wickets in 14 games, as he waits for more opportunities to get his spot in the team.

3. Rinku Singh's Exclusion

In his tweet, Shreevats Goswami also focused on Rinku Singh towards the end. He started off in the Indian team by getting consistent opportunities in the T20 format. But over the past few months, fans have hardly watched him play for the team and finish the games like he used to do. Goswami said that despite not doing anything wrong, Rinku has also been dropped.

Rinku Singh in T20Is:

  • Innings: 25
  • Not Out: 12
  • Runs: 550
  • Average: 42.30
  • Strike Rate: 161.76
  • 50s: 4

Rinku Singh has been known as the proper finisher for the Indian team. Even in the final clash against Pakistan, Rinku Singh was finally able to make his way to the Indian team after a long while. He ended up finishing the game with a four, as India won the Asia Cup 2025 by defeating Pakistan.
