South Africa now faces a double blow ahead of the white ball series against Pakistan. David Miller, the stand-in captain of the team, has been ruled out of the T20I series. Along with that, Gerald Coetzee will be missing the entire tour due to injury woes.
The injury issues are still hurting the South African team on the Pakistan tour. The team did perform well in the Test series against them, winning the final Test to level the score. And now, they are getting ready for the white ball series,
Just at the time when the series is about to begin, the team has suffered with not one but two major blows. David Miller has been ruled out of the T20I series, while Gerald Coetzee is also missing out on the entire tour. With the team going without the key players, will they be able to tackle the Pakistan challenge or not?
David Miller was serving as the stand-in captain of the team for the T20I series against Pakistan. But on Wednesday, some scans took place to check the fitness of Miller. It was revealed that he is suffering from a Grade 1 right hamstring strain during the training session. This was confirmed by the CSA via a post on X.
David Miller in T20Is:
Miller will now be going through a rehabilitation program to ensure that he is available for the T20 World Cup 2026. He last played a T20I game for South Africa back in 2024 against Pakistan. It should also be noted that his last international appearance was during the semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025.
Gerald Coetzee in ODIs:
Along with him, there is another player who will be missing out on the white ball series. And it is Gerald Coetzee. The CSA confirmed that Coetzee suffered an injury while he was bowling in the T20I game against Namibia. Coetzee suffered a pectoral muscle injury in the match, and he won't be available for the team.
Gerald Coetzee in T20Is:
It was also added that Coetzee will be going through a recovery period, considering the seriousness of the injury. His rehabilitation will take place under the supervision of Cricket South Africa High Performance and Momentum Multiply Titans medical teams.
Noting the unavailability of David Miller and Gerald Coetzee to the team, South Africa has announced some changes to the squad. Donovan Ferreira has been named as the new stand-in skipper of the team in the T20I series. He will be leading the side in place of Miller, and two new batsmen have been added, including Tony de Zorzi and Matthew Breetzke.
Tony de Zorzi in T20s:
Tony de Zorzi, being uncapped, has made it to the T20 squad. Fans are also expecting him to make his debut in the shortest format of the game in the series against Pakistan. Matthew Breetzke will also be heading to the T20I series, being named as a replacement.
Matthew Breetzke in T20Is:
With several key players not being available for the team, it seems to be the right time for Matthew Breetzke to regain his form in the T20I format. He didn't have a good start to the same, being able to register just one half-century in 10 games. Now, the series against Pakistan could help him to step up for the team and create his mark for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Ottniel Baartman in List A:
Ottniel Baartman has also replaced Gerald Coetzee in the team in the ODI squad. He has been a stellar bowler in the List A games, maintaining his consistency to take wickets. Along with that, he has already played 4 ODI games for the team, making him ready for his potential comeback to the playing XI.
