Australia beat India by two wickets in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval. Adam Zampa and Xavier Bartlett picked up seven wickets between them to restrict India before Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly shone with half-centuries as the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

‌Australia pocketed the three-match ODI series with a two-wicket win over India in the second match at Adelaide Oval on Thursday. Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly hit half-centuries during the chase to power the hosts after Adam Zampa and Xavier Bartlett shone with the ball to restrict the Men in Blue to a sub-par total.

India got off to a slow start in the second ODI after being put in by Australia captain Mitchell Marsh at Adelaide Oval on Thursday. Opener Rohit Sharma looked rusty as he played out 24 dot balls in the first six overs as India managed just 17 runs on the board. Things went south as captain Shubman Gill was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett in the next over, as he tried to accelerate proceedings. In the same over, Bartlett trapped Virat Kohli in front, with the veteran batter recording consecutive ducks for the first time in his 304-match ODI career. However, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer repaired the Indian innings as the pair kept the scoreboard ticking with a slow but steady stand. The Indian opener showed signs of shifting gears with two pulled sixes off Mitchell Owen in a 17-run over. He got to his fifty in 74 balls with a single off Cooper Connolly in the 22nd over. Meanwhile, Shreyas looked assured against the spinners from the other end, bringing up his fifty seven overs later. The pair looked set to take India to a formidable total, but the reintroduction of Mitchell Starc into the attack worked wonders for the home side. The left-arm pacer dismissed Rohit, who hit seven fours and two sixes during his 97-ball 73, to break the 118-run stand for the third wicket as India suffered a mini-collapse. Shreyas Iyer, the other set batter was also dismissed by Adam Zampa as the Men in Blue slipped from 135/2 to 174/5. The Punjab Kings skipper made 61 off 77 balls and had seven hits to the fence. However, a handy knock from Axar Patel (44) and an entertaining cameo from Harshit Rana ensured that India finished at 264/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Leg-spinner Zampa was the pick among the Aussie bowlers with a spell of 4/60 in 10 overs, while Bartlett impressed with figures of 3/39 in his quota of 10 overs.

In reply, Australia had a similar start with openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head adopting a cautious approach, managing just 15 runs in the first six overs. The Aussie skipper bit the dust, an over later, trying to up the scoring, nicking left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh to wicketkeeper KL Rahul. The visitors looked right in the game when Harshit Rana had Head caught at mid-off after he mistimed a flick. But Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw added 55 runs for the third wicket to take the home side past the 100-run mark. The visitors once again fought back into the game with the wickets of Renshaw (30) and Alex Carey, with the score reading 132/4 after 27 overs. However, Short kept them going as he held one end up with a crucial half-century. He hit four fours and two sixes before departing for 74 off 78 balls, with the hosts still needing 78 runs in the last 14 overs. But Mitchell Owen’s (36) enterprising cameo, which included three sixes and two fours, made light work of the chase, with Cooper Connolly also playing a key role. The all-rounder scored five fours and a six to remain unbeaten on 61 off 53 balls as the hosts reached 265/8 with 22 balls to spare. For India, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar all ended with two wickets.
