Batters often get saved by umpiring blunders, and Sune Luus just entered that list during the ODI World Cup game against India in Visakhapatnam. The South African all-rounder missed the ball completely to be hit in front of the wicket before the snickometer showed an invisible edge.
The wicketkeeper-batter top scored for the Women in Blue with a 77-ball 94, including 11 fours and four sixes, while the left-arm spin duo of Chloe Tryon and Nonkululeko Mlaba picked up five wickets between them.
The South African chase started cautiously before pacer Kranti Goud pulled off a stunning catch of her own bowling in the third over to send back the in-form Tazmin Brits. New batter Sune Luus also found the going tough against some accurate pace bowling from Goud and her new-ball partner Amanjot Kaur.
After scoring a solitary run from her first seven balls, Luus tried to get a move on with a fullish delivery from Amanjot, angled towards leg stump in the last ball of the fourth over. But she missed the flick with the ball going under her willow and crashing onto the pads.
The umpire appeared unmoved despite a vociferous appeal from Amanjot and the Indian side. The all-rounder looked supremely confident as she wasted no time in persuading her captain Harmanpreet Kaur for the review.
With Harmanpreet going for the DRS, Sune Luus looked pensive, but a feeble noise saw a wave in the snickometer. The third umpire, surprisingly, concluded that there was a faint edge and ruled in favour of the on-field umpire.
The Indian camp could not believe what had just transpired, with the captain walking towards Luus with a big smile and telling her there was no bat. The batter also reciprocated with a wide grin and continued her innings.
Twitter was stunned as Luus was still in the middle, courtesy of an umpiring blooper.
