India is now preparing themselves for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. This series is all set to commence from 14 November, with the first Test being at Eden Gardens. Before the match, Shubman Gill was present in a Press Conference, where he talked about the team composition and their for the game.
Along with that, he indirectly hinted at the end of Mohammed Shami's Test career. It has been more than 2 years since Shami has played a Test match for India. As he gets repeatedly excluded from the team, the Indian skipper might have talked about his future in the Test format in the press conference.
In the Press Conference, Shubman Gill was asked by the media reporters about Mohammed Shami. With his fabulous performances in the Ranji Trophy, he is eyeing to make a comeback to the Test side after a long time. But with every series, his exclusion from the line-up continues, and it also happened in the series against South Africa.
Gill , “I think a bowler of Shami Bhai’s quality is not found easily, but you also have to take into consideration the bowlers that are playing. They have done an excellent job so far. You can’t ignore the performances of someone like Akash Deep or Prasidh Krishna. We all know what Siraj and Bumrah have been doing in Tests. Sometimes, it’s very difficult for players like Shami Bhai when they have to miss.”
With this, Gill expressed his dissatisfaction for not having Mohammed Shami in the team. But at the same time, he also praised the bowling performances of other players such as Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and even Mohammed Siraj. Bumrah and Siraj have been the key bowlers, while Krishna and Akash Deep are making their place on the team.
this, Gill said, “It’s important for us to know what the next series is and where we are playing it, to plan ahead. What kind of fast bowlers can give us the best chance? As for fitness and selection matters, the selectors would be in a better position to give a clear answer on that.”
At last, Shubman Gill also talked about Shami's fitness concerns which have been prevailing for a while. But it should be noted that Shami has marked his comeback to the longer formats of the game. Even in the Ranji Trophy, he was able to give some great performances for Bengal to help them win.
Mohammed Shami and Ajit Agarkar also had a verbal clash a few weeks ago. When India's squad for the Australian tour was announced, Shami did not have his name in the same. He said that if he can play for four days in a Ranji match, why can't he bowl 10 overs in an ODI game.
Following this, Ajit Agarkar also responded to the claims made by Shami. He said that due to the fitness issues the BCCI selectors did not pick Mohammed Shami to the team. And with the domestic season going on, Agarkar said that if Shami performs well, he will make it to the team.
Playing three matches in the Ranji Trophy, Mohammed Shami has been proving his worth to the selectors since game one. In the match between Bengal and Uttarakhand, he ended up taking 7 wickets combined in both innings, the POTM award.
Mohammed Shami continued his impressive performances against Gujarat in the next game. He took 8 wickets in this game, which even included a five-wicket haul. Even after taking 15 wickets in 5 innings, Shami still finds himself excluded from the Indian team in the Test format.
