PAK vs SL | Twitter laments as helpless Hasaranga sums up Sri Lanka’s woes after DRS blunder

DRS was introduced as a shield for teams from umpiring bloopers, but Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka did not expect it would come back to haunt him. After burning both reviews in their first ODI against Pakistan, Wanindu Hasaranga was denied by the umpire, only for replays to show it was out.

‌Sri Lanka had a decent start with the ball after winning the toss against Pakistan in the first ODI in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. With some consistent stuff from their new ball duo of Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera, they restricted the home side to 28/1 at the end of the first powerplay.

With Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam rebuilding the innings with a patient stand, captain Charith Asalanka introduced the visitors’ strike bowler Wanindu Hasaranga into the attack in the 14th over. The leg spinner came up with instant rewards, dismissing Fakhar in his third over before sending back Mohammad Rizwan cheaply in his next.

He was not done yet as he scalped the other set batter Babar too for his third wicket of the evening. And the Rajasthan Royals spinner was unlucky to miss out on a fourth in the same over, with the umpire turning down a vociferous appeal from him and his side.

After setting up new batter Talat Hussain with two wrong ones, Hasaranga bowled a leggie next up, which pitched on a short of a length outside off before turning in viciously into the southpaw. He was caught up in his crease as the ball beat the bat and wrapped on the knee roll.

But the umpire stood steadfast in his decision as he nodded his head in disapproval, and the visitors did not have any reviews to turn to. Asalanka was guilty of making two mediocre DRS calls, earlier in the innings, with the ball pitching outside leg stump on both occasions.

With no technology for assistance, a helpless Hasaranga sat on his knees, still unable to contemplate how the umpire did not raise his finger. The replays showed the ball crashing into leg stump as a poor choice of review cost the leg spinner his fourth wicket.

Twitter lamented as a mediocre decision from the umpire, together with the absence of a review, denied a game-changing scalp for the bowling all-rounder.
