Test matches are all about hard work and playing out sessions, and Ollie Pope painfully realised that during the third Test at Lord’s. The batter was heartbroken as he was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja with the first ball after tea, after doing all the hard work in the post-lunch session.

‌India and England faced off at Lord’s for the third Test with the series interestingly poised at 1-1. The home side won the toss and opted to bat in warm and sunny conditions in London, with pace ace Jasprit Bumrah coming into the Indian eleven in place of Prasidh Krishna.

The visitors did well to dismiss both openers with medium-pacer Nitish Kumar Reddy producing a double strike in his first over at the hallowed venue. The experienced Joe Root, along with Ollie Pope, ensured that the hosts did not lose another wicket as they went in for lunch at 83/2 in 25 overs.

The pair continued to be watchful in the second session, opting for the classical Test cricket approach against England’s usual aggressive Bazball approach. India tightened the screws further with Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj’s accurate first spell post-lunch resulting in eight runs from eight overs.

But England made slow progress as the duo added 109 runs in 210 balls to be placed at a more stable 153/2 at tea. It was hard work for both batters as they eschewed any risks, adding just 70 runs in 24 overs with Root getting a patient half-century.

But Ollie Pope was heartbroken as all the efforts of the previous session vanished in the matter of a ball. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja provided the much-needed breakthrough for India as he induced the batter’s outside edge, against the run of play, with Dhruv Jurel pouching on to a difficult chance.

Pope knelt on one knee with his hand on his head, unable to believe what had just transpired, and started his long walk to the pavilion. Twitter was impressed with the timing of Jadeja’s breakthrough as India looked to dominate the final session.
