Australia win the third ODI by a huge margin of 276 runs at the Great Barrier Reef Arena at Mackay on Sunday. Century from top three and Copper Connolly’s five-wicket haul seal the deal for a consolation win as Aussies destroy Proteas' clean sweep hopes and their second biggest win in the ODI.
Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the third and final ODI game and straight away put the South African bowlers under the pump. Openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head took the attack to the bowlers in the power play, putting them in a dominant position in the power play at 86/0. The dominance did not end there, as the two openers continued to accumulate runs in the middle overs at a healthy strike rate. South Africa was still in search of their first wicket as the hosts were still looking strong at the halfway stage with the score reading 184/0 after 25 overs. The nightmare continued for the visitors until the 250-run stand was finally broken in the 35th over by Keshav Maharaj, as Head was finally dismissed after a dominant knock of 142 off 103 deliveries. As soon as the partnership was broken, Marsh was dismissed shortly after completing his century in the 37th over, giving the Proteas some hope for a comeback. Unfortunately, that was the only moment of celebration for the Rainbow Nation as Cameron Green and Alex Carey carried on from where the two centurions left off and took the score to 305/2 after 40 overs. Both batters continued the onslaught at the death as the last 10 overs went for another 126 runs, with Green bringing up his maiden hundred, and Carey remained unbeaten on 50. The hosts ended the innings on a massive score of 431/2, which is also the second-highest ODI score for the Men in Yellow.
Though it was a huge total on the board, a fight with the bat was expected as their top four looked in great touch in the first two games. However, Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett wreaked havoc in the power play with two wickets each. The chasing side were straight away put in a tricky position with the score at 65/4 after 10 overs. While there was some for the Proteas with a partnership between Dewald Brevis and Tony de Zorzi, the wickets started to tumble with some terrific catches by the home-side on the field and a magnifucent spell by Cooper Connolly, who took his first five-wicket haul in ODIs as South Africa were finally bowled out for 155 in 24.5 overs and lost the game by 276 runs. This also ruined the Proteas' chances for a clean sweep.
This was a massive consolation win for the Aussies
