Twitter reacts to Matthew Wade taking perfect revenge on Archer by smashing monster ‘scoreboard’ six

There is something about Matthew Wade that makes him an extremely entertaining contender. Sometimes he is darn serious, sometimes he is goofy, sometimes he is annoying and other times, like today, he ends up being brutally ruthless by extracting revenge on his fiercest competitor.

It was to the credit of Matthew Wade and Jofra Archer that the final day of the fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Oval became an entertaining encounter. With England having set Australia a target of 398, and with Steve Smith gone and the Aussies still in hangover, the enthralling series looked like it was headed for an underwhelming finish - until Wade and Archer intervened. In a riveting passage of play post tea, the duo exchanged blows back and forth - with Wade mostly being at the receiving end, being hit on the body by some Archer rockets - and it made for some top-notch viewing.

That day, despite Wade scoring a ton, it was Archer who walked away with bragging rights. It took the Aussie exactly one year, but at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday, Matthew Wade exacted his revenge in the most brutal manner imaginable. After eyeing up Archer for three balls - one of which went to the boundary after Wade gloved it - the Victorian unleashed on ball four, and boy wasn’t it the best moment of the series.

On the last ball of the first over of Australia’s chase, Archer, looking to hurry his former Hobart Hurricanes teammates for pace, bowled a fiery good length delivery, trying to intimidate the southpaw. However, as the ball landed right in the slot, Wade locked his stance and absolutely obliterated the ball towards cow corner with an enchanting flick. The sound off the bat was sweet but so brutal was the impact that the ball flew all the way and landed bang on the scoreboard - much like Gambhir’s six off Umar Gul in the 2007 World T20.

It was a moment of sweet revenge for Wade, who levelled up the contest with his former BBL teammate. Here’s hoping they get to play Round 3 in one of the three ODIs later this week.

What a shot!

That was huge

There are two kinds of luck in sport: the one that stops you from looking like a goofball and the other which outrightly makes you look like a genius. Today at the Ageas Bowl, Aaron Finch became an accidental genius after Sam Billings smashed a reverse-sweep off Zampa straight to his hands.
