ICC World Cup 2019 | I may play against India when they tour the Caribbean, reveals Chris Gayle

Before the advent of the ongoing World Cup, Chris Gayle had stated that he may hang the boots on what has been a long career after the tournament. Having made his debut 20 years ago for West Indies in ODIs, he has since played 450-plus international matches scoring 18,000-plus runs across all the three formats of the game. He has also served as the captain of the national team in the past.

However, in a press conference ahead of a crucial World Cup tie against India, Gayle made a remark stating that he may not yet quit the game after all. 

“It’s still not the end. We still have a few matches to go, and maybe another series after this so knows? We’ll see what happens,” Gayle said, reported Cricket Country.

“My plans after the World Cup… I may play a Test match against India, and then I’ll definitely play the T20s and ODIs against India,” he added.

A bit of a casual remark, it was initially perceived to be an attempt at humour by the explosive opener, something he does pretty frequently. However, soon after, West Indies media manager affirmed that Gayle was serious when he made the comment and could feature for the West Indies in India’s upcoming tour.

India is scheduled to play two tests, three ODIs and three T20Is in the West Indies a month after the conclusion of the World Cup. The tests will be a part of the inaugural World Test Championships. He has averaged 68.67 in ODIs in 2019 and has shown is still capable of playing at the highest level. Having last played in the game’s longest format almost five years ago, the tour will serve as a farewell to the holder of multiple records and undoubtedly a legend of the game.
